BACKGROUND

I was born in the late-1960s into a family with a rich heritage of service and leadership. My great-grandparents were English missionaries who devoted nearly six decades to serving in China, and my grandfather became a well-known minister in Charlotte, North Carolina, where it was often said he had “married or buried half the city.” My father graduated from Oral Roberts University, then built a successful career in fashion merchandising, and finally retail management.

Growing up, I was determined to forge my own path, especially when my younger brother’s lifelong dream of military service was cut short by Type 1 diabetes. Needing financial support for college and seeking a greater sense of purpose, I enlisted in the military in the mid-1980s. After completing basic and specialized training, I reached my first permanent duty station, only to be critically injured in the line of duty during the first year and ultimately received a medical discharge, under Honorable conditions, with full educational benefits. Drawing on my creativity, teaching instincts, and strong mechanical aptitude, I re-enrolled in college near my home city, transferred earned credits from the school located near my former duty assignment, changed my major from business administration to mechanical engineering, and began my civilian career in industrial flow technology as a field and technical services manager with a regional distributor.  My life has never been the same...
